TOM THOMSON: HIS LIFE AND ART

The 18th Lakefield Literary Festival opens with a special presentation celebrating the life and art of Tom Thompson. Author/ host Charles Foran introduces film producer Peter Raymont for a showing of his documentary West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson. Shot in Algonquin Park, Georgian Bay, Seattle and Toronto, the film features never-before-seen works by this iconic Canadian artist. Post film, join a lively discussion with Nancy Lang, co-producer and researcher of the film, art historian Joan Murray, author of A Treasury of Tom Thomson, author/journalist Roy MacGregor, author of Northern Light: The Enduring Mystery of Tom Thomson and the Woman Who Loved Him.

SHIFTING TIDES OF HISTORY

8:00 pm Bryan Jones Theatre, Lakefield College School Admission: $20.00

Join acclaimed Toronto author, Kim Moritsugu, for an evening of reading and discussion with two authors who have enthralled readers around the world with their well-crafted storytelling. Frances Itani returns to Lakefield with her newest novel, Requiem, in which a grieving artist seeks consolation over his wife’s death and painful memories of his past. Steven Heighton places his characters in exotic locales and distant times in stories called “vivacious, purposeful and entertaining.” His most recent work is the short story collection The Dead Are More Visible.

Boys and girls of all ages are invited to gather at the children’s tent to meet two of Canada’s most engaging writers. Governor General’s Award-winning author Rachna Gilmore will share from some of her many picture books including, her newest, The Flute. Acclaimed author/illustrator Ian Wallace returns to the Festival to share one of his most enduring stories for young people: The Name of the Tree.

Come and meet two acclaimed writers whose works nurture our future adult readers and their parents. Author Rachna Gilmore will read from That Boy Red, the adventures of a boy living in Prince Edward Island. This book is nominated for a Silver Birch Award 2012. Author, teacher, actor, songwriter and musician, Richard Scarsbrook, will share from his new short story collection Deleted Scenes, or his latest novel, The Indifference League. Bring a friend and enjoy listening to and talking with these talented authors.

CANADIAN RAILROAD TRILOGY

In his newest book, renowned author/illustrator Ian Wallace brings Gordon Lightfoot’s classic song Canadian Railroad Trilogy to visual life with his landscapes and portrayals of the people who built the railroad. Join award-winning author and host, Richard Scarsbrook, for an afternoon of fun with Dan Needles. Dan is the author of the famous Wingfield Farm Series plays, based on the adventures of a stockbroker turned farmer. But, he also writes columns for several magazines including Harrowsmith-Country Life and Country Guide magazines. When not writing, Dan runs a farm with his wife, raising sheep, rare chickens and their four children. From these sources, Dan, a Stephen Leacock Award for Humour winner, has compiled a one man show which will have you chuckling in your seat.

CHRIST CHURCH COMMUNITY MUSEUM

Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily during Festival weekend, Christ Church Community Museum, Queen St. Lakefield Admission: Free to all. Donations are appreciated.

The Christ Church Community Museum houses important historical artifacts, electronic pictorial displays of early life and work, the literary history of Lakefield, the Strickland family history and information regarding the burial ground surrounding the church. The impact of the railroad on early Lakefield is the focus of this year’s exhibit.

BETRAYAL

Lynn Coady and Wayne Johnston in conversation with author/ host and Festival friend, Charlotte Gray, will explore the intersections between family, violence, friendship, love and the impact of the written word. Hailed as “One of Canada’s most original writers” Lynn Coady’s stunning novel, The Antagonist, explores the inner world of Gordon Rankin, a man struggling with a devastating past. In A World Elsewhere, award-winning author, Wayne Johnston deftly draws us into the compelling story of Landish, disinherited son of a wealthy sealer, whose poverty and love of his adopted son drives him to make a life changing decision. Both novels present the looming protagonists whose humanity in response to betrayal touches the reader to the core. An evening not to be missed.

Morning Worship at Lakefield United Church, Regent St., which, in 2012, is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, David Wilson, editor and publisher of The United Church Observer will be the guest speaker. The Observer, founded in 1829, under the leadership of Egerton Ryerson, is the oldest continuously published magazine in North America.

ON THE CASE

What is it about mystery novels which attracts such a large and diverse readership? Back by popular demand, we present our third session of mystery writers. Host Andrew Pyper, author of The Guardians, introduces a trio of writers whose books develop around their enduring detectives. Scott Thornley’s sleuth, MacNeice, is a senior police officer in the Southern Ontario town of Dundurn. Erasing Memory is the debut novel of this new crime series. A second installment in the series The Ambitious City has just been released. John Moss has lived a life of travel and adventure which flavours his Quin and Morgan mysteries. Miranda Quin and David Morgan are Toronto homicide detectives who are described as “worldly, witty, sometimes cynical, brilliant together, and often very funny.” Their latest adventure is I See England, I See France. In 2008, Reader’s Digest named Gail Bowen “Canada’s Best Mystery Writer”. Her series features Joanne Kilbourne, a university professor, sometime political columnist and a wife, mother and grandmother. Kaleidoscope is the thirteenth Kilbourne title. Enjoy the ambience of the Whatley barn for the final session of this year’s Festival.
